Police investigate 'disturbing' assault on video

media thumbnailPittsburgh police said multiple people are facing charges following a violent assault at a North Side gas station Friday. A video of the incident at the Exxon Mobil gas station went viral on social media. Dozens of protesters also gathered at the Exxon Mobil on McKnight Road in Ross Township, echoing the same chant and holding signs calling for the closing of the gas station, which protesters said is owned by the same people in the video. The gas station also closed on Saturday. One lane of McKnight Road was shut down as protesters moved into the road. Police were at the scene as traffic moved slowly in the other lane. Authorities said they responded to the assault in the 2500 block of Brighton Road around 6:45 p.m. Friday. Investigators said they learned there had been a fight between the male gas station owners and employee and two female customers. Police said the fight broke out after a verbal argument over an alleged pump malfunction that caused gas to spill. When the customers asked for a refund, the store owners refused to provide one. Authorities said they looked through multiple videos of the fight, including surveillance video from the gas station. One bystander video showed the store owners hitting one of the women in the back of the head multiple times and an employee grabbing one of the women by her hair and dragging her across pavement. Police said the gas station's surveillance videos show a female customer initiating the confrontation inside the store before it moved outside. Police said charges should be filed against the owners of the gas station and the employee, adding that investigators submitted paperwork to the Allegheny County District Attorney's Office on Friday night. {{file|t=sbpBy_1569140474}}
